For a decade, thousands of fun-loving Montanans would go to Whitefish over the course of two weekends to celebrate the best Oktoberfest the state has ever seen. The events of 2020 threw a wrench in our plans for big gatherings, and this year has proven to be a bit bizarre as well. Fortunately, Whitefish’s annual fall festival is back, and although the celebration will be more subdued and spread out, it’s still going to be a great time.

The Great Northwest Oktoberfest typically takes place at Depot Park and lasts for two weekends.

An enormous tent is set up, and guests enjoy live music, dancing, contests, kid-friendly activities, and lots of beer.
In order for Oktoberfest to return to Whitefish in 2021, some changes had to be made in order to accommodate everyone and still comply with current restrictions.

Luckily, many of the traditional festivities, including the log-sawing, are still happening.
Instead of a party at the park, this year, Oktoberfest is coming to town.

The fun kicks off on Thursday, September 23, at The Great Northern Bar & Grill at 5 p.m. This is Locals' Night, meaning Flathead residents get their first beer free. This night will have live music, German folk dancing, log-sawing, and more.

Much like night one, Friday night will have live music and dancing, but this time you can enjoy the Men's and Women's Stein-Holding Contests.

It's also Round 1 of the 2021 Oktoberfest Hop Queen Pageant.
Oktoberfest's final day is Saturday the 25th, kicking off at noon at the Montana Tap House.

Bring the whole family this time -- Saturday marks the Kids’ Day Chicken Dance Championships at 3:15 p.m. Festivities last until 8 p.m., culminating with the crowning of the new Hop Queen around 6:45.
Oktoberfest may look different this year, but it's still bound to be a great time.

Remember, all event times are tentative and dependent on a lot of factors -- so if you go, keep an open mind and be flexible. None of that should be difficult when there's clearly so much fun to be had!
