Dig For Ancient Fossils At This Little-Known Dinosaur Park In Montana

It’s no secret that Montana is full of dinosaur fossils — we’re home to a statewide dinosaur trail, after all. But did you know there are spots where you can play paleontologist yourself and dig for fossils? Just head to Two Medicine Dinosaur Center and try your luck.

The Two Medicine Dinosaur Center is located in the tiny town of Bynum, about 65 miles northwest of Great Falls.

The nonprofit has been around since 1995, and it's actually listed on the Montana Dinosaur Trail.
This is primarily a museum and research facility dedicated to preserving fossils in the local communities near where they're discovered.

The center sees more than 5,000 visitors a year, most of them fellow Montanans.
The team here believes that the best way to learn about something is the experience it for yourself.

The center offers plenty of dig programs, and there's no minimum (or maximum!) age required to find fossils.

Needless to say, this is an extremely popular place for school groups.
Because of the rainy season in this part of Montana, the dig sites typically don't open until mid-June.

Mid-June through September seems to be the best time to go.
The Two Medicine Dinosaur Center is one of just two museums in Montana to employ degreed paleontological staff.

The staff here provides assistance and expertise to other Montana Dinosaur Trail spots as well.

The center is open daily from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. through Labor Day. Hours vary in the off-season. Admission is just $5, or $3 for children over 3.
