The Charming Town Of Troy, Montana Is Picture-Perfect For A Weekend Getaway
Sometimes after a long or particularly difficult week, to celebrate a special occasion, or just because, you need an escape to somewhere beautiful for a weekend getaway. Troy, Montana is just the place, with a picturesque setting, positioned at the base of the Cabinet and Purcell Mountains on the banks of the Kootenai River.
Troy is rich with spectacular, Instagram-worthy scenery as far as the eye can see while kayaking, tubing, or fishing. There’s also the Yaak River if you’d like more than one option to explore.
Bring your own kayak or rent one from Cabinet Mountain Rentals, which even offers free delivery within 20 miles.
Visit the Kootenai River Historical marker, which is inscribed with the story of the Kootenai tribe for which the river was named. From the marker, you can hike less than a mile to the river, the swing bridge, and Kootenai Falls, Montana’s largest waterfall.
Some of these massive, majestic cedars are believed to be about 1,000 years old!
For a lower-key, relaxing type of activity, experience the Bull River Valley Scenic Drive, which stretches for over 30 miles through forest and meadows, past streams and lakes, with breathtaking panoramic views of the Cabinet Mountains.
Expect no more than an hour's drive each way. If time permits for another drive, there's also the Yaak Loop Scenic Route. It's a bit longer at 96 miles long, but you'll get glimpses of the Yaak River and Falls along the way.
If you want to unplug and you’re up for off-grid, more secluded accommodations, the views of the Cabinet Mountains from this tiny, rustic Airbnb, the Northwest Montana Retreat Cabin, are incredible.
For more of a bed and breakfast type of lodging, the quaint Double J B&B is a wonderful option, affectionately described as the jewel of Troy, Montana.
The menu offers a nice variety, from breakfast pizza to avocado toast to biscuits and gravy and so much more, such as the best-ever lattes!
For lunch or dinner, stop by The Silver Spur, a restaurant, bar, and casino, where you can get amazing prime rib, country-fried steak, salmon, and more.
You’ll also find small-town hospitality and nice-sized portions at a fair price.
The charm of this little town, Troy, Montana, may just be the perfect example of why the state has been unofficially nicknamed “The Last Best Place,” first by Douglas Chadwick in his book, “A Beast the Color of Winter.”
Speaking of winter, there’s a good chance you’d have snow in the picture if you visit during that time of year. And no matter the season, you could happen upon some wildlife.
