These 10 Montana Cities Are Perfect For An Unforgettable Summer Day Trip
Summer is officially road trip season in Montana, especially since a good portion of our state isn’t easily accessible during the winter months. Now that the weather is warming up and the days are long, it’s time to hit the road and explore some of our charming cities.
These 10 spots have all the attractions you’ll need for an unforgettable day. And if the drive would be too long to see everything in a single day, you can always make a weekend of it.
This 19th century mining town is one of the best places on the planet, especially in the summer. Head there for one of their events, like the 4th of July or the Flint Creek Valley Days, and you'll see why people love it so much. 2. Virginia City
Virginia City really comes alive in the summertime. From the tours to the shows, to the locals dressed up in character, it's an unforgettable experience every Montanan should see.
The first permanent white settlement in Montana happens to be a great day trip destination, especially for those living in the Missoula area. Visit the beautiful St. Mary's Mission, shop for antiques at the Creamery Antiques Mall and enjoy a meal at one of the many delicious dining options.
Between it's unique museums, mines and historic dining establishments, Butte is an underrated city that's especially fun to explore in the summer.
5. Fort Benton
Stevensville may be the sight of Montana's first permanent settlement, but Fort Benton holds the title of the oldest official city. And there's nothing like walking along the Missouri River on a hot summer day check out all the historic sites and buildings, not to mention the Instagram-worthy Bridge to Nowhere.
Heading to Flathead Lake this summer? Stop and explore Polson for a day (if you're not staying there). Lakeside dining, the Kerr Dam and a quirky museum (Miracle of America) are just a few great things you'll find there.
7. Cooke City
Often regarded as a mere stopping point on the way to Yellowstone National Park, Cooke City is actually a pretty amazing day trip destination. The Cooke City General Store alone is worth the drive.
Eastern Montanans need day trips too! Head over to Glendive and check out the Pioneer Museum, have a Dairy Queen Blizzard, or kick back with a cold one at Busted Knuckle Brewery.
9. Red Lodge
Red Lodge Mountain is enjoyed all winter, but the city of Red Lodge is a great summer destination as well. Check out the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary and all the charming gift and specialty shops, and stop for lunch at the charming Cafe Regis.
Bigfork looks like something out of a storybook. While the city is known for going all out at Christmas, it's also an amazing place to see on a hot summer day, especially if you can catch a festival or parade.
