This Scenic Drive Runs Straight Through Montana’s Glacier National Park, And It’s A Breathtaking Journey

Just about any drive in Montana means access to incredible views and lots of opportunities for attractions. In fact, around every corner is a forest, mountain, or lake just waiting to be explored. And, while we love having such easy access to beautiful landscapes, it certainly pays to go out of our way a bit. This drive through Glacier National Park is a fantastic way to remember just how lucky we are to be in Montana. You’ll undoubtedly want to check this out.

One of the best ways to take in the beauty of Montana is by taking an incredible drive through Glacier National Park. There are a few routes that lead to different parts of the one million acres that make up the park. But there's one that truly stands out. And, quite a few visitors agree.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road is about 50 miles and it crosses the entirety of Glacier National Park, between the east and west entrances.

The scenic drive travels through Logan Pass and across the Continental Divide where it reaches a height of 6,646 feet. The views from this area are absolutely incredible.

The route gets its name from the Going-to-the-Sun Mountain, which can be seen easily looking east from Logan Pass.

Additionally, along the route, there are quite a few places to stop and enjoy the hiking trails in the park. While the drive takes a few hours, it's worth making this an entire day's trip.

Taking the drive during the summer is easiest since there's a greater chance all areas will be open. But, keep in mind that this is also the busiest time for visiting. While this is certainly one of the most beautiful drives in the West, it's definitely not a secret.

And, while we'd love to keep the journey all for ourselves, it wouldn't be fair to expect others not to take in the incredible views from the park.

While the Going-to-the-Sun Road is open year-round near the park’s West Entrance, the entire road isn’t open until the winter conditions improve. At the earliest, this is typically late June. Be sure to check the official National Park Service website for current conditions and closures. Also, note that all vehicles accessing the road will need reservations beginning in summer 2023.
