Plan A Visit To Kootenai Falls, Montana's Beautifully Blue Waterfall
Where will your travels take you this year? If there was ever a summer to stick close to home, this would be it… but luckily, the Treasure State is full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Northwest Montana has its own unique beauty, and Kootenai Falls is especially stunning. If you have yet to see this gorgeous waterfall in person, make this the year you do.
Kootenai Falls is located just downstream from the charming town of Libby.
Finding it couldn't be easier thanks to road signs and a designated parking lot.
This beautiful blue gem is actually the largest undammed waterfall in the state of Montana.
The falls and surrounding area are considered sacred to the Kootenai tribe, whose ancestors once inhabited the area.
To reach Kootenai Falls, just take an easy 0.8-mile out-and-back trail from the parking lot.
The only challenge is crossing the swinging bridge... but even those with a fear of heights will tell you it's not that scary.
While you're on the bridge, stop and take in the rugged natural beauty all around you.
The bridge sits at an elevation of 2,100 feet and it offers unparalleled views of the Kootenai River gorge.
The Kootenai River loses 300 feet in elevation traveling a few hundred yards downriver.
Kootenai Falls is about 30 feet tall at its highest point.
This is a popular place for Montanans since it's a nice, easy hike with an amazing reward.
While the trail to reach the falls is short, you'll definitely want to spend some time here enjoying the views.
