Montana’s Hyalite Canyon Looks Even More Spectacular In the Winter
We might be biased, but we happen to think Montana is a magnificent place to call home (the best, actually) in any season. And it’s hard to top some of our mountain towns, canyons, and waterfalls trails in the summertime. But venture out during the winter and you’ll see that our state’s beauty is never buried beneath the snow… in fact, the snow seems to enhance it. If you’ve ever explored Hyalite Canyon this time of year, you’ve seen it for yourself.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. While we continue to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, please take proper precautions or add them to your bucket list to see at a later date. Between its three campgrounds and two day-use areas, this is the most heavily visited recreation area in Montana.

But we happen to think this area hits its peak in the wintertime.

Of course, most of these will not be easily accessible in the winter. But you can always bring your snowshoes and find a place to explore. There are also some great Nordic ski trails.

It's a part of the Gallatin National Forest.

The reservoir also serves as a main focal point in the canyon, surrounded by 10,000-foot mountain peaks, creeks, streams, and waterfalls.

It is known as an ice climbing destination due to being surrounded by high peaks and steep ridges. Obviously, we recommend leaving the ice climbing to the professionals.

But if the weather permits, it's definitely worth taking a drive to the canyon and taking in the unparalleled seasonal beauty.
