- Beehive Basin (Big Sky): If you're seeking some of the most beautiful views in the world, they are here and accessible by a 6.6-mile round-trip trail. While it's graded as moderately difficult, some reviews say it is very vertical and mostly uphill for about 3.5 miles becoming steeper at the summit. If you're in good shape - the payoff is worthwhile. An elevation gain of 1,500 feet offers free views of Lone Peak, leading into Beehive Basin after about 3.3 miles. This is a U-shaped glacial cirque ( an amphitheater-like valley formed by glacial erosion) that has a crystal-clear lake overlooking one Peak.
- Ousel Falls (Gallatin Gateway): See this loveliness on a 1.7-mile out-and-back trail in the heart of Big Sky. It begins at a fork where you'll head right to the Yellow Mules Trail. This journey includes many peaceful areas that go along the South and West Forks of the Gallatin River. Another interesting aspect of the hike is the three bridges to cross before reaching the waterfall. A split near the falls offers four picturesque routes: the South Fork Overlook, the top of the falls, the base of the waterfall with a picnic area and pool, and the Ousel Falls Overlook. All of the choices lead to stunning scenery well worth the time.
- Fairy Lake (Bozeman): This enchanting mountain lake sits at the base of the Sacagawea Peak in the Bridger Mountains. While you can drive to this body of water on a bumpy road, hiking the five-mile out-and-back trail is also an option. It's a moderately difficult trail reaching a 900-foot elevation, so imagine the stunning views at this place. Be prepared to swim in the warmer months and pack a picnic to relax at the top and watch the wildlife creeping along. Parking is available at the Carrol Creek trailhead and the trail starts across the road.
