There’s A Castle In Montana That’s Also A Museum And It’s A History Buff’s Happy Place
Montana doesn’t have many castles, but what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. In 1892, a magnificent castle structure was built in White Sulphur Springs. The building now serves as a museum, and you’ll definitely want to check it out.
The Byron R. Sherman House, also known as The Castle, was constructed in 1892.
Byron R. Sherman spared no expense when constructing this magnificent mansion.
The castle has 12 large rooms, all featuring hardwood floors and covered with Belgian and Oriental rugs.
Sherman enlarged a pond on the property that was fed by a nearby spring. Electricity was carried into town on bare wire strung on pine and spruce poles. For its time, it was quite advanced.
Sherman called the castle home for awhile before he retired and moved to California.
Half a century later, the Meagher County Historical Society restored the structure to much of its Victorian splendor. The castle has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1977.
These days, the Castle Museum and Carriage House is a charming museum that's open from early May until late September.
And when it's open, it's one of the top attractions in town.
Each room offers a different glimpse into the past.
The home has been decked out with period furniture, mineral samples, clothing, and artifacts from our local past.
As if the castle wasn't amazing enough, the Meagher County Historical Society built a large carriage house behind the castle.
The carriage house features all the old carriages and sleds they found around town.
The Castle Museum and Carriage House is a must-see for all history loving Montanans.
If you'll be anywhere near White Sulphur Springs this spring or summer, then check it out. Admission is just $5 for adults and $3 for children and seniors.
