The Natural Beauty of Montana’s Avalanche Lake Is Almost Otherworldly
There are at least 3,223 known lakes and reservoirs in the state of Montana. And if you’ve lived in the Treasure State for quite some time, you’ve probably got a favorite or two. But while tourists flock to the well-known spots like Flathead Lake, Seeley Lake, and Lake McDonald, we’ve got plenty of hidden gems that aren’t quite as accessible that will take your breath away. Avalanche Lake is one of them.
Avalanche Lake is located in Glacier National Park, southwest of Bearhat Mountain.
While it certainly gets its share of visitors, it's typically nowhere near as popular and some of Glacier's well-known lakes in the summertime.
One of the reasons you won't often see the same crowds at Avalanche Lake is because it requires a bit of a hike to reach.
To reach it, you'll hike the Trail of the Cedars and then veer off at the signs for the lake. The trail is about four miles in length total (out and back).
The lake was named by Dr. Lyman Sperry, who saw and heard multiple avalanches as she explored the area in 1895.
And no, it is not a coincidence that the area's largest remaining glacier is named Sperry.
The glacier Sperry actually helps keep this water so fresh and pure.
This really is one of the most spectacular lakes in Montana.
The lake sits at the base of Bearhat Mountain, which rises almost 4800 feet above it.
As you explore the areas, you might see some little waterfalls also formed by the Sperry Glacier, The glacier cannot be seen from the lake.
Swimming and fishing are allowed here, although you'd have to be pretty sweaty to want to jump in this lake.
The water is pristine, but it's absolutely freezing.
Avalanche Lake is one of Glacier National Park's most beloved treasures.
