With its rich and storied history, Missouri naturally boasts its fair share of paranormal tales. Some believe in the paranormal while others don’t. The mansion was originally and briefly the home of Harvey and Sophia Vaile. However, two years after they moved in, in 1883, Sophia died of a drug overdose. Fittingly, the mansion then made the transition to a home for drug addicts and the mentally ill.
Several patients died during lobotomies during their stay at the facility. Perhaps it is their spirits who remain today and whom guests have seen chained in the basement. If you don’t see one of them, you might catch sight of Sophia, whose spirit is said to remain in her bedroom to this day.
Bingham-Waggoner Estate is the second stop on Paranormal Path. Dating back to 1827, the estate was once home to famed Missourian George Bingham before the Waggoner family purchased the property.

Some visitors tell of seeing Mr. Bingham, complete with a top hat, wandering through his former home. Others have seen a bride lingering on the staircase. It’s said that many years ago she fell down those very stairs to her death on the day of her wedding.
The final stop on Paranormal Path leads straight to 1859 Jail, Marshal’s Home & Museum, where you’ll get a fascinating glimpse at the criminal justice system from centuries ago.

Countless visitors tell of strange experiences at the jail and museum, including hearing a man struggling to breathe and footsteps approaching – but no one’s there. Don’t be surprised if you start to feel nauseated or really cold, both normal occurrences for some visitors.
