Hooray! Or, nay? Missouri’s seen its first snowfall of the season. And, you probably fall into one of two categories: You’re either really happy to see that snowfall. Or, you’ve already started counting down the days until spring. Fortunately, Missouri’s not had a record-breaking snowfall in quite a few years. Today, let’s take a little stroll down Memory Lane to the day that Missouri saw its single largest snowfall ever.

1. Missourians know a little something about snow. After all, if you live north of the Missouri River, you experience an average snowfall of 18 to 24 inches each winter.

2. And, if you’re south of the Missouri River, you see significantly less, at between eight and 12 inches annually, according to the University of Missouri’s Climate Center.

3. But, of course, sometimes we face a massive snowstorm that shatters all records - like the blizzard that engulfed Missouri on February 1-2, 2011.

4. The two-day blizzard hit most of Missouri while it dumped snow from the Central Plains to the Great Lakes.

5. Over the two-day period, affected areas saw between two to three inches of snow fall each hour.

6. However, Bates County broke the state’s record for the single largest snowfall in a day on February 2 when two-feet of snow fell in only 24 hours.

7. Warrensburg, in Johnson County, experienced 23 inches of snow between February 1-2, shattering its previous record of 20 inches on February 19, 1938.

8. In addition to the snow, Missourians had to deal with high winds. Kirksville, Adair County, logged the highest wind gusts in the state at 52 miles-per-hour with St. Joseph, Buchanan County, coming in a close second at 51 miles-per-hour.
