Since it opened on July 4, 1888, the luxury hotel has suffered from its fair share of tragedy, becoming quite a local legend.

The Elms Hotel burned down *twice* - in 1898 and in 1910. Fortunately, no one is known to have perished during either inferno that completely gutted the hotel.

After The Elms was rebuilt for the second time, it re-opened in 1912. Soon, thereafter, speculation began that spirits, who had experienced one of the fires, still remained in the hotel.

By the Prohibition-era, however, The Elms earned a reputation for both its Speakeasy and for its famous visitors, including reputed gangster Al Capone.

The Speakeasy was also popular with gamblers and those who indulged in other illegal activities. Today, some say that the spirit of a gambler remains in the hotel.

However, if you want to catch a glimpse of this unassuming spirit, you'll have to go to the luxurious lap pool.

Keep an eye out for the apparition of a housekeeper, dressed in 1920's garb, too. Don't worry; she's said to be friendly.
