The Fort Belle Fontaine Trail In Missouri Leads You Straight To An Abandoned Fort
History whispers all throughout Missouri, often allowing us valuable glimpses into the past. Whether you’re a fan of history or an avid hiker, or both, you’ll want to consider a journey along the Fort Belle Fontaine Trail in Missouri. The winding trail boasts lush green scenery and spectacular views. Perhaps most notably, however, it leads to an abandoned fort.
You can find Fort Belle Fontaine, in St. Louis, on the multi-state Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail or along the Fort Belle Fontaine Loop Trail, the latter of which we'll follow today.
You'll come across the remnants of a trading fort, which opened in 1805. It was, in fact, the U.S.'s first military installation west of the Mississippi River.
In those early days, the fort was constantly busy, with local farmers and merchants providing goods to those who stayed there. The fort was used by enlisted military members.
...sensational, sprawling views. You'll have an abundance of opportunities to learn about the fort and the trail's history by reading the historical markers dotted along the path.
Head over to the official website of the National Park Service for more information. You can also find more on the official website of St Louis County.
