The History Behind This Remote Hotel In Missouri Is Both Eerie And Fascinating

The Morse Mill Hotel is a remote bed & breakfast located just 45 minutes south of St. Louis in rural Jefferson County. Although still in the process of renovations, this eerie hotel has been attracting paranormal investigators from all over the country for a night of strange and unexplainable occurrences. This amazing structure is full of history and possibly lingering spirits… are you brave enough to find out?
The Morse Mill Hotel was originally a small farmhouse constructed in 1816 when Missouri was technically still under Spanish rule. It wasn't until John H. Morse purchased that the structure became the mammoth 4-story, 5,300 square foot structure that it is today.
During its lifetime, the hotel has been a hospital for Confederate prisoners of war, a brothel, a speakeasy, a United States post office, and a half-way house. It is also believed to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad. The stone wall in front of the building was actually hand carved by freed slaves.
During the 1920's and 30's, the hotel thrived as a luxurious getaway for wealthy St. Louisians. Other notable guests were actress Clara Brown, gangster Al Capone, pilot Charles Lindbergh, and outlaw Jesse James.
The first woman serial killer, Bertha Gifford, worked at the hotel. It is believed that she poisoned nearly 25 people. Her husband, whom she killed by poisoning, is one of the many spirits that remains in the Morse Mill Hotel.
Paranormal investigations and tours are often conducted at the Morse Mill Hotel. This image captured one of the spirits just moments before the woman seated complained of scratches on her neck.
There have been hundreds of orbs captured on film inside the structure. The owners, who have been renovating the structure, believe that the changes have escalated the paranormal activity in the hotel. It is very common to hear footsteps from the empty floors above, a piano playing on the first floor, or to see orbs and mists in many of the rooms.
Renovations at the hotel are almost complete and the owners expect to welcome their first guests this April. They will also be exploring a tunnel that runs under the hotel where paranormal activity has been extremely active.
