People Will Drive From All Over Missouri To Red’s Giant Hamburg, For The Nostalgia Alone
Do you ever crave a blast from the past? A trip to the arcade after work instead of after school, as the coins jingle in your pocket? A double-feature at the drive-in? Or a classic burger, fries, and shake at a nostalgic restaurant in Missouri? We’ve got quite a few old-school restaurants in Missouri, but Red’s Giant Hamburg just might be the most familiar – and beloved.
You can't miss the giant sign proclaming you've arrived at Red's Giant Hamburg in Springfield, a neighborhood institution for decades. It was, in fact, the world's first drive-thru restaurant.
It originally opened in 1947 then shuttered nearly four decades later, before the original location was demolished in 1997. The beloved little restaurant, however, was rebuilt and reopened in 2019.
