Most People Don’t Know About This Underrated Zoo Hiding In Mississippi

As far as zoos in Mississippi, the Jackson Zoological Park and the Tupelo Buffalo Park and Zoo, which was once rated “best park” in a Mississippi Reader’s Choice poll, are probably the first to come to mind. But there’s another zoo that, even though it’s a bit smaller, shouldn’t be ignored. Take a look:

The Hattiesburg Zoo first opened in 1950 and is located in the city’s Kamper Park.

It’s open Tuesday - Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and has an admission of just $5 for adults and children over 2 and $4 for seniors 62 and up.

At just 12 acres, the zoo is much smaller than the state’s other zoos; however, those 12 acres are brimming with things to see and do.

In addition to nearly 100 species of animals from around the world…

…the zoo includes a train, carousel, picnic areas, petting zoo, and more.

The easy-to-navigate zoo is divided into sections based on different regions of the country.

So, for example, in the Africa Section, you'll find antelope, monkeys, zebras, and more.

As you make your way around, you’ll get close-up views of some familiar faces…as well as a few that aren’t so familiar.

A splash pad provides the perfect spot for younger ones to cool off, should you visit on a hot summer day.

There’s also a rope course, which is four stories high and includes a variety of obstacles and challenges.
