The One Mississippi City You Need To Visit In 2018

Southern Living released a list of the “10 Best Places to Travel in the South in 2018.” Among the places listed was Mississippi’s capital – Jackson. As the largest city in the state, Jackson is not lacking when it comes to things to do. From great museums to incredible restaurants, it’s definitely deserving of its spot on Southern Living’s list. So, if you plan on making 2018 the year you visit Jackson, read on to make sure you don’t miss a thing!

Even better, a visit to the city won’t break the bank. According to Forbes magazine, Jackson ranks 3rd out of America’s 100 largest metro areas where you get the best "Bang For Your Buck."

Head to the capital city and you’ll find all sorts of museums, with options including basics like the Mississippi Museum of Art and Museum of Natural Science as well as more specific options, like the Capitol Museum and the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Museum.

When in Jackson, be sure to pay a visit to the city’s newest museum - the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum (pictured). Opened in December 2017, it aims to "promote a greater understanding of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement and its impact by highlighting the strength and sacrifices of its people."

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the former home of the internationally acclaimed author is open for tours Tuesday – Saturday.

While in Jackson, check out some local blues and jazz at Underground 119. In addition to live entertainment, the speakeasy type venue serves up southern eats and cocktails.

The Mayflower Café was opened in 1935, making it the oldest restaurant in Jackson. But that’s not its only claim to fame. According to Thrillist, it’s also the most famous restaurant in Mississippi. And if you think it looks familiar, it’s probably because the café has been featured in several movies, including "Ghosts of Mississippi" and "The Help." Visit the famous café, and you can fill up on a unique fare that combines local cuisine and Greek seasonings.

Originally opened in 1946 as a pharmacy and soda fountain, Brent’s has retained its retro feel throughout the years, which is thanks in part to the checkered floors and vintage furniture. Aside from the retro digs, Brent's is known for its quintessential diner fare, which includes all day breakfasts, fast food eats, and desserts.
