And with the 2020 hurricane season predicted to be one of the worst in years, it doesn’t look like things will be slowing down anytime soon. That’s right; the meteorologists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predict an above-normal season. Read on for all the details.

Running from June 1st – November 30th, hurricane season has officially begun, and the NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center expects it to be quite active here in Mississippi.

More specifically, there’s a 60% chance that we’ll have an above-normal season.

During the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, experts predict that there will be 13 – 19 named storms, of which, 6 – 10 could become hurricanes.

Furthermore, it's likely that 3 – 6 of the hurricanes will develop into major hurricanes (category 3 or higher).

The busier-than-normal season can be attributed to several factors – one of which is record-high water temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico, according to Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA).

And though Mississippi is vulnerable to hurricanes anytime during hurricane season, it’s especially susceptible between August and October.

MEMA also pointed out that Mississippi is one of the states most likely to be hit by a hurricane.

And it’s not just the state’s coastal region affected by hurricanes. An active hurricane season can be felt further inward in the form of flooding and tornadoes.
