A Popular Mississippi Roadside Attraction Is Tragically Fading Away
Mississippi has several roadside attractions worth a visit. Sadly, though, it looks like the state may soon have one less. And that’s because the quirky roadside stop, Margaret’s Grocery, sits abandoned and is quickly deteriorating. Read on to learn about this one-of-a-kind site before it’s gone forever.
Dubbed "a Mississippi folk art treasure," Margaret’s Grocery is situated on Highway 61 in Vicksburg.
Owned by Reverend Dennis and his wife Margaret, it started off as a standard grocery. However, in the 1980s, the Reverend set out to transform it into a "palace."
Sadly, Margaret passed away in 2009, and the Reverend a few years later in 2012. Since the Dennis’ deaths, Margaret’s Grocery has fallen into a state of disrepair.
At one time, Margaret’s Grocery was visited by people from all over the world. It’s even been featured in notable publications, such as National Geographic. All of which makes its current state even more shocking.
Though Daniella was born in New York and has lived in a couple of other states, Mississippi has been her home for the past 25 years. After graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi, Daniella began to hone her writing skills through various internships, working for The Royal Obsession and Anatomie clothing.
