Minnesota is known for its more than 10,000 lakes, but our state has plenty of other bodies of water as well. The Mississippi River flows north to south through much of the state, the St. Croix River forms the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the Cannon River offers fun recreation opportunities. Today, we want to recommend yet another great river to spend some time on, in the form of the Minnesota River. Flowing through much of western, central, and southern Minnesota, it offers plenty to see and do. One of the best ways to enjoy the river is by taking a drive along the Minnesota River Valley National Scenic Byway. Read on below to learn more about this scenic drive full of beauty and fun.
The Minnesota River Valley National Scenic Byway is a beautiful route through west-central and southern Minnesota. It begins in Browns Valley in the west and continues through the Minnesota River Valley to Belle Plaine.
As you follow the route, you'll pass through many of Minnesota's most charming towns. From Manato to Saint Peter to New Ulm, Redwood Falls, and Montevideo, you'll find plenty of opportunities for interesting shopping, great dining, and more in each of these small towns.
While you're on the road, you'll pass through some of Minnesota's prettiest landscapes. From the car windows, you'll see glimpses of the Minnesota River and the fields, forests, and farmlands that lie along it.
There are six state parks along the route, each offering up its own great attractions. For example, Big Stone Lake State Park is the headwaters of the Minnesota River. Trails lead to gorgeous views, wildlife viewing opportunities, and more.
Other state parks, such as Lac Qui Parle, have great camping, hiking, boating, and other outdoor recreation. Some parks have interesting historical sites for those curious about Minnesota's past. There is truly something for everyone.
Wildlife lovers will enjoy exploring Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge, an 11,000-acre nature area that preserves Minnesota's tallgrass prairie and the species that live there. You can spot many different kinds of birds, 12 different reptile species, common critters such as rabbits, deer, foxes, and much more.
If you're itching to get on the river itself, consider taking a break from diving to do some kayaking. Paddling this restful river is sure to bring peace. There's no better way to enjoy the beauty!
