Being the 32nd state to join the United States, Minnesota may seem like it doesn’t have a whole lot of history. One of the most interesting? It is home to the oldest basilica in America. You can still visit it today.

The basilica first began at another location in 1871, but the current structure was built starting in 1907. It officially opened in 1914, though the interior was not finished until 1925.

In 1926, Pope Pius XI named it a minor basilica. It was the first basilica in the United States.

Today, the building is one of the most beautiful in downtown Minneapolis, its tall walls of Vermont granite hard to miss while passing by.
