There Are 4 Must-See Historic Landmarks In The Charming Town Of New Ulm, Minnesota

If you’ve spend a little time in Minnesota, you probably know that our state has a strong Norwegian heritage. We have many towns that prove it. Charming Lindstrom is often called America’s Little Sweden. And tiny Askov has strong Danish roots. But New Ulm might just be our favorite Old World town to visit in Minnesota!

New Ulm is a town in south-central Minnesota, roughly 100 miles southwest of Minneapolis. With a population of over 13,000 people, it is a thriving town with a lot to see and do.

Many enjoy strolling through the charming downtown area, where the many local shops and restaurants offer plenty of interesting goodies up for grabs.

Others love New Ulm’s natural surroundings, such as nearby Flandrau State Park. Its sand-bottom pond is great in the summer, and its lovely forests are ablaze with color in the fall!

Beyond the shops, restaurants, and nature areas, New Ulm also has several interesting historic landmarks that are must-see destinations for first-time visitors. The Hermann Heights Monument is particularly popular.

This large monument, striking with its columns and spiral staircase, raises an impressive statue of Arminius high into the air. Arminius was a member of the Cherusci, an early Germanic people, who also happened to be a Roman officer. He lived around 20 BCE to 20 CE. In New Ulm, his statue rises 102 feet off the ground.

This impressive monument, which represents all Americans with Germanic heritage, has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973.
New Ulm’s Glockenspiel Clock Tower is another must-see site in the town. A freestanding structure that rises an impressive 45 feet tall, it is certainly an eye-catching landmark.

The glockenspiel was first dedicated in 1980. It sounds four times each day, at 1, 3, 5, and 6 p.m. During these times, 37 bells chime their song. At the same time, a series of 12 figures rotate on a circular stage, putting on an impressive show.

Another testament to New Ulm’s German history, this monument is a fun place to visit when you’re in town. Be sure to time your trip to the chiming of the bells!
The Harkin Store is another historic landmark worth checking out. It’s an authentic general store that dates back to 1871!

The old wooden shelves and countertops are lined with the same kinds of goods that were sold here more than 100 years ago, from tools and paper to food and household goods. Not only was it a store, but it was also a gathering place for people to exchange news and trade goods and services. This historic landmark is a true step back in time and one of few attractions of its kind in Minnesota.
Finally, one of New Ulm’s most popular historic landmarks is August Schell Brewing Company, or Schells Brewery. Head here after you’re done sightseeing!

This brewery has been in business since August Schell, a German brewmaster, opened its doors in 1860. That makes it the second-oldest family-owned brewery in the United States! It was also the first brewery in Minnesota to start making craft beers, spearheading a trend that is still going strong today. You can visit August Schell to learn about its history with a brewery tour. Afterwards, head to the Bier Halle to find your new favorites!
