You’re Going To Love These Predictions About Minneapolis’ Mild Upcoming Winter
When most people think about Minneapolis (and Minnesota in general), the state’s harshly cold and snowy winters are usually the first thing to come to mind. Last year Minneapolis experienced one polar vortex after another, with temperatures dipping below zero degrees Fahrenheit often; however, it doesn’t look like that will be the case this year. The annual Farmer’s Almanac predictions for winter 2017-2018 are out and they predict this year will be a bit different for us!
Love it or hate it, Minneapolis winters are undeniably gorgeous.
The iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry looks stunning while covered in a dusting of snow, and we'll definitely still see snow this winter... but less of it, according the Farmers Almanac.
A mild winter would mean good news for Minneapolis bikers.
If the Farmer's Almanac prediction is correct, this will mean fewer freezing polar vortexes and make it much more comfortable for the eccentric and hardcore winter bikers the city has.
Have you ever wondered how the Farmer's Almanac makes their predictions about seasons around the country?
The Almanac writers say that they use a secret formula to hypothesize harsh winters. Some of the tell-tale signs of a cold and snowy season ahead? Thicker than normal corn husks during growing season, geese leaving the Twin Cities earlier than normal, and pigs gathering sticks. There's even a sing-songy way to remember the estimate of a cold winter: 'See how high the hornets' nest, 'twill tell how high the snow will rest.'
Whether or not you put faith in the rhymes, the Farmer's Almanac has a pretty good track record for their predictions - they are correct about 80% of the time!
We hope not! Winters are important to Minnesotans. With climate change becoming a bigger threat to the world with each passing year, most Minneapolitans recognize the necessity of cold, frosty winters, even if they're okay with taking a break from it this year.
When the Mississippi River partially freezes over and the lit up Stone Arch Bridge emphasizes the beauty of winter nights in the city, take a big deep breath of fresh cold air and appreciate the season.
It’s important to note that it’s impossible to determine what the 2017-2018 winter will have in store for the residents of Minneapolis. The Farmer’s Almanac has a tradition of prediction the weather patterns for each season, but nothing is certain.
