What are some of the best frozen waterfalls in Minnesota?
Pigeon Falls is of course, pretty spectacular when frozen in the wintertime, but some little-known waterfalls throughout MN are worth checking out, too. Here are some of the best frozen waterfalls in Minnesota that you may not have heard about yet:

  • Kadunce River State Wayside, Grand Marais MN: The Kadunce River flows into Lake Superior through a beautiful gorge near Highway 61. As the near-freezing lake waters splash against the shore it creates giant walls of ice that look just like frozen waterfalls. Hiking through the gorge trails will also treat you to real frozen waterfalls. There are several smaller cascades and a few bigger ones that freeze completely solid during some winters.
  • Banning State Park, Sandstone, MN: This charming state park has several hiking trails (about 18 miles in total). Some of them lead you down to the Kettle River, which is also a popular Class IV rapid perfect for kayaking in the warmer months. However, if you take the Wolf Creek Falls Trail it will take you to a beautiful waterfall that partially freezes in the wintertime. Wolf Creek Falls is a picturesque waterfall all year round, but its sheets of frozen water make for some incredible photos in the winter.
  • Nerstrand-Big Woods State Park, Nerstrand, MN: This Southern Minnesota gem is a beautiful wooded area teaming with wildlife - even in the winter. Hidden Falls is created when Prairie Creek tumbles over a limestone wall. It may not be very tall, but it is just the right height to give you a good show. When sections of it freeze in the winter it creates a fascinating wall of ice.
