These 14 Weird Ice Formations In Minnesota Are Simply Mesmerizing

When winter hits in Minnesota it brings brutally cold weather, capable of freezing entire streams, waterfalls, and lakes. And while all this ice can lead to more danger when exploring, it also provides one-of-a-kind beauty that simply can’t be found in warmer climates. We found these snapshots of ice formations in Minnesota that are stunning and unique, so that even in the most miserable of weather, we can still enjoy the true beauty of nature.

1. In Lutsen, a photographer captured this frozen stream and the beautiful icicles that it created.

2. On Lake Superior, this harbor staircase is completed covered in ice creating a frozen window for light to filter through.

3. This mosaic of ice is absolutely stunning, especially with some fresh snow.

4. Like the picture before, the ice shards on Lake Superior create a beautiful mosaic. These ones are piled high along the Lakewalk.

5. On White Bear Lake this unusual hoarfrost in which large “ferns” of ice, seem to sprout directly from the frozen lake.

6. The ice on the surface of these rocks looks beautifully marbled.

7. The shore plants create a truly unique ice formation.

8. This "pancake ice" on Lake Superior is absolutely beautiful as it floats along the shore.

10. As the frozen shore melts you can find these round ice formations that look like clouds floating above the lake's surface.

12. The ice patterns on the lake are beautiful from the ice slab mosaics to the swirling paths.

13. Another great shot of Superior shows massive blocks of ice piled as high as the people walking around them.

14. In -15 degree weather, the ice in front of the Grand Marais Lighthouse looks spectacular.
