For better or worse, we Minnesotans have access to more than a few extremely creepy sites. From haunted hikes to ghost-riddled restaurants, there is something spooky waiting around every corner. But perhaps the scariest haunted location in all of Minnesota is a haunted cave. Think about it: being underground, caves are already creepy, dark and full of mystery. And when you add the haunted lore that surrounds this cave, it gets even more terrifying. Read on to learn about the haunted cave in Minnesota that you can visit today.
Minnesota's most haunted caves are the Wabasha Street Caves.
These caves - technically mines - were carved out of sandstone back in the 1840s. There is quite a lot of legend surrounding what the caves have been used for - and by whom.
The caves have been used for a number of different purposes over the years.
The caves have been home to bars, restaurants, and storage spaces. They have also hosted mushroom growers and cheese makers. And those are only the most legitimate of activities the caves have hosted.

There are some even more interesting uses of the caves.
During 1920s Prohibition, the caves were used as a speakeasy called the Wabasha Street Speakeasy. Local legend says that, among other people, the notorious gangster John Dillinger used the cave as a hideout.
One of the most famous stories is about the triple murder that is said to have happened in one of the cave's rooms.
It is said that a witness to the murders called the police, who then spent several hours cleaning up the crime scene. When they were finished, it was as if there was no crime at all. One theory is that the police covered up the murders, helping the perpetrators escape by providing extra police uniforms to them.
It is this event that has spurred some of the ghostly rumors surrounding Wabasha Street Caves.
Apparitions of gangsters have been spotted by guests touring the caves. For example, a man wearing a dark suit has been spotted straightening his tie in the men's restroom. A host of other sightings have been recorded as well. All in all, Wabasha Street Caves is said to have a whole slew of otherworldly visitors.
Guests can learn about the legends surrounding this cave - and about its ghosts - on one of several cave tours.
For example, the Lost Souls tour is an hourlong walk through the caves by candlelight. Guests will hear the stories of people who have witnessed ghost sightings in the caves. It's sure to be a fascinating look into the early history of St. Paul.
