The Land of 10,000 Lakes is home to some truly remote places. Sure, it might seem like you’re in the middle of nowhere as you paddle through the Boundary Waters or explore a lesser-known state park. But it’s possible to get even more away from it all when you visit one unique island in the middle of Lake of the Woods. It’s only accessible by boat, but it’s a wonderful place for fishing, picnicking, and enjoying one of the least-visited recreation areas in the state. Read on below to learn all that you’ll find at Garden Island State Recreation Area in northern Minnesota.
Garden Island State Recreation Area is a small park found on an island - Garden Island - way, way up in the northern reaches of Minnesota. The island is on Lake of the Woods, only accessible by boat.
Those who explore the island often encounter wildlife. Many birds have been spotted on the shores and in the water. In the woods, white-tailed deer, foxes, and even black bears have been spotted.
The island's beach is full of sand and small pebbles. Thanks to its northern location and the size of Lake of the Woods, the water can be quite cold. But many still dip their feet in to cool off!
Beyond exploring the shores and the island interior, many people come to this island for its excellent picnic grounds. Fishing outfitters often stop for an afternoon lunch. What better way to enjoy the fresh-caught fish from a Lake of the Woods excursion?
This unique island is not often visited because of its remote location. But those who do journey to it find peace, beauty, and discovery. It's a must-visit for those looking to explore even the farthest reaches of Minnesota!
