Where do you go when you need to get away from it all? If you’re a Minnesotan, it’s likely that you spend some time on the water. Our state’s more than 10,000 lakes make it easy to do just that. If you’ve spent any time here, you probably already have a favorite lake or two. That’s why today, we want to set our sights on not a lake, but a beautiful Minnesota river that is full of activity. Read on below to learn more about all that you can do along Minnesota’s St. Croix River.
The St. Croix River is a 169-mile river in Wisconsin and Minnesota. For a 125-mile stretch, it forms Minnesota's eastern border with Wisconsin. Here, you'll find plenty to do both in charming river towns - Marine on St. Croix, Stillwater, and Taylors Falls are all great places to visit - and on the water itself.
Many people enjoy boating or kayaking along the river. This is a great way to spend some time in the sun during the summer. In the fall, the sight of the changing leaves along the river is unbeatable!
Many visit Taylors Falls to take a ride in a historic riverboat with Taylors Falls Scenic Boat Tours. You'll get to enjoy the beautiful scenery as the boat peacefully meanders down the river. Everyone should do this trip at least once!
If you prefer to stay on land, pay a visit to Interstate State Park in Taylors Falls. The high dalles along the river are a must-see attraction, as are the impressive potholes created by the glaciers that once covered Minnesota.
Other state parks also offer interesting opportunities to see the river. In Center City, Wild River State Park has plenty of lovely trails along the river. While not as rugged as Interstate, this park still has plenty to see!
If you're looking for a swim, check out the beach at Afton State Park. There are shallow waters, sandy banks, and plenty of opportunities for some fun in the sun. Best of all, this lesser-known beach isn't as popular as others in Minnesota. You'll likely find peace and quiet while you're there!
Speaking of peace and quiet, you're bound to find it if you go camping along the St. Croix River. You can do this at any of the state parks along the river. Many enjoy the gorgeous views offered at William O'Brien - pitch a tent by the water and enjoy the scenery!
You can even grab a great meal along the river. Many riverfront restaurants are scattered throughout the towns along the St. Croix River. There is plenty to see and do in and along this amazing Minnesota river!
