There is plenty to do and see in Minnesota without spending a fortune on tourist attractions. From boat tours to hiking trails, and even seeing the headwaters of the Mississippi River, here are a few low-cost MN road trips to take with your family:

  • Taylors Falls, Taylors Falls, MN: This area is a scenic gem with cool geological features carved out by glaciers, plenty of hiking trails, and even a riverboat tour along the scenic bluffs of the St. Croix River. The tour might be a little pricey for large families, but this 80-minute experience is delightful - be sure to wave at everyone hiking along the river.
  • Jeffers Petroglyphs, Comfrey, MN: You may not have known there is a Petroglyphs site in Minnesota but there is. This little-known site features a large sheet of Sioux quartzite that is chock full of ancient carvings and old wagon tracks.
  • Lake Itasca State Park, Clearwater County, MN: This beautiful state park is a fun place to explore with lots of hiking trails, a cool little cafe, and of course the headwaters of the Mississippi River where you can walk across a short "path" of stones at the mouth of the Mississippi River. Spend all day exploring for only a $7 daily vehicle parking permit.
  • Gooseberry Falls State Park, Two Harbors, MN: Gooseberry Falls is absolutely beautiful with lots of hiking trails and waterfalls to discover. This North Shore state park is one of the most visited parks in Minnesota and can be enjoyed all day for only a $7 parking pass. With lots of camping in the area and other accommodations, you could easily spend a whole weekend exploring the area for a low-cost MN road trip.
