Small town life is seriously underrated, in the best possible way. Sometimes the size of the town cannot be measured by population, but in fact, by character. Here, we showcase 10 small towns in Michigan that you may or may not have heard of, but that really are the heart of the Great Mitten State.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. While we continue to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, please take proper precautions or add them to your bucket list to see at a later date. With a population of just around 600, this Lake Michigan coastal community will give you epic views of the water, without the big crowds.

This tiny village in Manistee County is home to just under 300 people and is another secret haven for lovers of Lake Michigan.

In comparison, this "bigger" town of about 3,700 sits off the banks of Lake Charlevoix.

Folks outside of Michigan will be impressed that you've "discovered" the town (population, about 10K) that the famous American automaker is named after... That's the story, right?

Originally founded as a Lake Huron lumber settlement, this township of about 2,200 remains a UP gem.

Headed back into the lower Mitten, you'll find this Mid-Michigan place, home to about 2,400.

Once you've tired of the busyness of larger Traverse City, head over to this Up North resort town of about 1,100.

Toward the western reaches of the UP, you'll find this Iron River. It's managed to keep its population at around 3,000.

East, along the banks of the St. Clair River below Lake Huron, is this town (population 4,200). Here, you'll have close proximity to Ontario, just across the river.

Another UP village, some 1,500 call this place home.
What we love most about these places is the sheer beauty and charm that they’ve maintained over the years – something that’s lacking in a big city. Tell us – where are some of your favorite small towns that virtually no one knows about?
