It has a lot to do with the legacy the automotive industry has had on our nation, a legacy that got its start in the Mitten. Here are 10 of the richest cities in Michigan, based on tax return data aggregated by the IRS.

Residents of this western Michigan city take home an average of $124,583 in gross annual income.

Residents of Rochester Hills, who earn an average of $124,944 in adjusted gross income, enjoy quieter scenery, while still having access to city life not too far away.

Tucked between Pleasant Ridge and Royal Oak, residents of this sleepy bedroom community boast an impressive average adjusted gross income of $127,871.

This city ranked high on our list of best places to live. Part of that had to do with the average adjusted gross income of its residents: $129,555.

This community, whose average adjusted gross income stands at $132,760, is one of the very safest cities in the country.

Residents here earn an average of $145,707 in adjusted gross income. That comes in handy with the community's many shopping amenities.

Home to Amway, residents here average some $150,133 in adjusted gross income.

The wealth really shows in this upscale Oakland County city, with residents' adjusted gross income averaging $171,055.

No, there is no Rodeo Drive in this suburban community, but it still has some of the wealthiest residents in the state, with an average adjusted gross income of $195,151.
