9 Easy Ways To Prove That You’re A Michigander Through And Through
We Michiganders come from all backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life. Diversity is part of what makes life here so fantastic, but there are a few traits that seem to remain constant among most residents of the Great Lakes State. When you’re eager to prove yourself as a true-blue Michigander, follow these tips.
During these uncertain times, please keep safety in mind and consider adding destinations to your bucket list to visit at a later date.
1. Carry a deck of cards for euchre with you at all times
We can’t exactly explain it, but Michiganders are deeply addicted to euchre. This beloved card game makes an appearance at family reunions, weddings, funerals, and everything in between. What could be more embarrassing than hosting a gathering, only to realize that you don’t have cards for the euchre tournament your guests have requested? Be sure to remain stocked up.
2. Vehemently defend your use of the word "pop"
Try as our out-of-state friends might, they’ll never convince us to stop using the word "pop" to describe our favorite fizzy beverages. Sure, we know that many other parts of the country are insistent upon using "soda" as a moniker, but true Michiganders will remain loyal to "Team Pop" forever and ever.
3. Spend any and all free time at the lake
There’s just something about living in Michigan that instills residents with a deep sense of connection to our beautiful Great Lakes. It’s easy to see why - after all, these gorgeous bodies of water offer a sense of peace, clarity, and natural wonder to visitors of all ages. Most Michiganders are glad to enjoy the shorelines of our state whenever the opportunity presents itself.
4. Keep your medicine cabinet stocked with Vernors
Why would you purchase over-the-counter stomach medication when you could simply load up on Vernors? Here in Michigan, this beloved ginger ale has helped us through countless bouts of nausea and indigestion, and we’ll swear by it for the rest of our days. True Michiganders never run out of Vernors.
5. Instinctively point to your hand when asked where you’re from
A map? What’s that? We’re lucky to be the Mitten State, and our unique shape affords us the opportunity to point at our palms when asked where we’re from. If you’re a Michigander through and through, your first point of reference when describing your hometown can be found right on your own hand.
6. Show appreciation for both peninsulas
Sure, we poke fun at each other by mentioning "Yoopers" and "Trolls" in reference to those who don’t live in our own peninsula, but we also understand how lucky we are to have access to so much natural splendor. After all, the U.P. sometimes feels like its own separate state, and there’s so much to explore and appreciate in every corner of Michigan.
7. Dress in layers every single day
Michigan weather is notoriously unpredictable, so lifelong Michiganders are careful to remain vigilant and prepared for rapid changes in temperature and precipitation. In fact, you shouldn’t be surprised to see the trunk of a Michigan resident’s car loaded up with winter coats in the heat of summer - just in case!
8. Root for the Lions without shame
This one might be painful, but it’s necessary to prove one’s status as a genuine Michigander. After all, we should be accustomed to the pain and disappointment of being Lions fans by now, right? Wrong. It still just flat-out stinks to know that our team has never made a Super Bowl appearance, but we refuse to give up completely on our beloved (albeit frustrating) team.
9. Openly weep when you hear a Pure Michigan ad
Nothing pulls at the heartstrings of a long-time Michigander quite like a Pure Michigan ad. Those flowery descriptions of our natural beauty, that swelling music, and the soothing tones of Tim Allen’s voice - what’s not to love? We can’t stop ourselves from getting a little teary-eyed with Michigan pride!
