Every Detroit family is different, but there are plenty of similarities that seem constant among people from the Motor City. After all, life in our beloved city is undeniably unique – and that’s something we’ll always share. Whether you and your kin are longtime Detroit residents or relative newcomers, here are ten things you’re likely to have somewhere inside your home.
Detroiters love pop, and we all know that Faygo is the greatest pop of them all. After all, we’ve been drinking this delicious fizzy beverage for as long as we can remember, and nothing screams "Detroit summer" quite like a refreshing sip of Redpop. Unless, of course, you prefer Rock ‘N Rye!
2. Better Made Potato Chips
Doritos? What are those? When it comes to snack foods, Detroiters keep their pantries stocked with products made right here in the Motor City. There’s something undeniably fantastic about enjoying a salty snack that has its origins in our neck of the woods, and Better Made fits the bill perfectly.
3. Sports gear.
If there’s one thing we Detroiters can’t get enough of, it’s sports. From the Tigers to the Red Wings to our beloved (albeit imperfect) Lions, most of us are hardcore fans of a team or two. Open our closets and you’re sure to find jerseys, memorabilia, and so much more. If you don’t own a Barry Sanders jersey, are you even a real Detroiter?!
4. Multiple snow shovels.
Not to mention a plethora of puffy winter coats, sidewalk salt, car scrapers, heavy-duty boots, gloves, scarves, hats, and possibly a supply of hand-warmers. After all, it gets cold here in Detroit, and we like to be prepared for the winter season. Every Detroiter’s home is stocked and ready for the freezing temps.
5. A medicine cabinet full of Vernors.
Everyone in Detroit knows that Pepto Bismol just doesn’t cut it when nausea strikes. If you’ve got an upset stomach while visiting a Detroiter, you might be surprised to see them reach into the cabinet and pull out a bottle of Vernors ginger ale. There’s a good reason for this, though: Vernors is truly the healing elixir you’ve always dreamed of!
6. A deck of cards (or three).
If you head to a family gathering in Detroit and no one suggests playing euchre, you might want to reconsider attending. After all, there’s nothing more classically Michigan than playing our favorite card game, and people from the Detroit area are seriously obsessed.
7. Motown records.
Detroit is the proud home of Motown music, and residents certainly don’t forget it! There’s nothing better than jamming along to Stevie Wonder or Diana Ross and the Supremes while cleaning the house or getting ready in the morning. Every true Detroit household will own at least a few Motown recordings.
8. Keys to a Detroit-made car.
Detroit is known as the Motor City for a reason, and our history as an automobile hotspot is one of our major points of pride. If you step into a home in our city, you’re sure to see keys to a Ford or Cadillac hanging somewhere - because there’s nothing better than a car made close to home!
9. Michigan-made beer.
Who doesn’t love a good pint of Michigan-made craft beer? We Detroiters are proud to live in close proximity to so many amazing breweries, and we celebrate this pride by stocking our fridges with all sorts of tasty brews from locales close to home. If you’re thirsty, you won’t be disappointed when you step into the home of a Detroit resident!
10. Lots of love.
Above all else, Detroiters are overflowing with love and strength. There’s a certain spirit of perseverance and pride that comes along with life in the Motor City, and this spirit is almost palpable upon stepping into one of our homes. Detroit has been through its fair share of struggles, but that never stops us from spreading love and hope throughout our beloved hometown.
It’s your turn, Motor City readers: is there anything else you’re sure to find in the home of a Detroiter? We always love hearing from you, so feel free to leave a suggestion in the comment section below!
