The new year is officially upon us here in the Motor City, and you know what that means: it’s time to start planning all your delicious dining adventures for the coming months. While indoor dining might be off-limits for the foreseeable future, that doesn’t mean we have to stop enjoying fare from some of Detroit’s top eateries. Here are nine awesome restaurants you should snag food from in 2021.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. 1. Michigan & Trumbull (1441 W Elizabeth St.)
If you think you’ve tried all the top pizza joints in Metro Detroit, think again. Michigan & Trumbull is a relative newcomer to the pizza scene here in the Motor City, but it delivers amazing pies complete with toppings ranging from buffalo chicken to chorizo with pickled red onion. Round it all out with a side of charred broccolini or smashed sweet potato. Does it get much tastier?
2. El Rancho Mexican Restaurant (5900 Vernor Hwy.)
When you’re craving Mexican food, Detroit has plenty of worthwhile options. One top spot is El Rancho, which serves classic dishes in an unassuming yet friendly atmosphere. Satisfy your most intense cravings at Vicente’s, where you’ll find Cuban eats to delight even the pickiest eater. From sandwiches to empanadas to seafood galore, there’s so much to enjoy. You’ll find yourself coming back to Vicente’s time and time again.
5. PizzaPlex (4458 W Vernor Hwy.)
Can’t get enough pizza? We completely understand, which is why we’ve included PizzaPlex on our list. While 2021 promises to deliver its fair share of stress, pizza always helps - and this restaurant serves up inventive eats made with local ingredients and lots of love. Whether you’re grabbing a few pizzas for family movie night or enjoying a pie for one, it’s hard to go wrong here.
6. Matt & Mo’s Italian Beef (24110 John R Rd., Hazel Park)
Venture to Hazel Park for some of the heartiest fare in the area. Matt & Mo’s prides itself on serving flavorful, filling, and all-around delicious Italian beef sandwiches from inside Doug’s Delight ice cream shop. If you visit during the warmer months, you’ll have the chance to enjoy dinner and dessert all in one convenient spot - and your taste buds will surely thank you.
7. Smokey G’s Smokehouse (2670 Atwater St.)
This Atwater Beach locale is ideal for unashamed carnivores of all ages who want to satisfy their meatiest cravings. Whether you dig into a smoked turkey leg, chow down on a slab of ribs, or keep it hot with an order of spicy beef sausage, you’ll be in culinary paradise in no time at all.
8. Yumvillage (6500 Woodward Ave.)
This fantastic restaurant serves Afro-Caribbean cuisine that will have your mouth watering immediately. The flavors here are bright, complex, and decidedly unique for many Detroiters who’ve never tried Afro-Caribbean dishes before. Favorites include peach honey mustard chicken, guava tahini chicken, and lamb shank. Yumvillage will easily become a new favorite.
9. Street Beet (4626 3rd Ave.)
Searching for some vegan options here in the Motor City? Street Beet definitely has you covered, offering a 100% vegan menu full of comfort food and some of the tastiest flavors in town. With vegan versions of hot chicken sandwiches, chicken parm, breakfast sandwiches, and more, there’s no shortage of deliciousness awaiting you here.
