9 Reasons Why Detroit Is The Best City
Call us biased, but we Detroiters have a great deal of pride when it comes to our city. Detroit is overflowing with history, beauty, wonderful people, and all sorts of things to do. Whether you’re planning your first visit or celebrating a lifetime of Detroit residency, here are nine undeniable reasons why the Motor City is amazing.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life as we all practice social and physical distancing. While we’re continuing to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, we don’t expect or encourage you to go check them out immediately. We believe that supporting local attractions is important now more than ever and we hope our articles inspire your future adventures! And on that note, please nominate your favorite local business that could use some love right now:
1. It's diverse.
No matter where you’re from or what you believe, you’ll find a place to feel at home here in Detroit. Our city is proud of its diversity, and we’re happy to welcome visitors and new residents from all across the world. From Greektown to Mexicantown, there’s something here for everyone.
2. It’s the birthplace of Motown.
Are you a fan of Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, or Motown music in general? You can thank Detroit! Our city is responsible for some of the world’s most iconic tunes, and we’re pretty proud of it. Just think: without Detroit, you might never have been introduced to some of your all-time favorite artists!
3. Its history with the auto industry is fascinating.
While the auto industry has had its ups and downs, we remain endlessly proud of our city’s contributions to the development of automobiles across the world. If you’ve ever driven a car from one of Detroit’s "Big Three" auto makers, you can thank our wonderful city for transporting you from place to place.
4. It has some of the best food in the world.
If you’ve never had square pizza — classic Detroit style — you’re absolutely missing out. We know it might sound strange to out-of-towners, but trust us: there’s just something extra delicious about our city’s pies! If you’re not a pizza fan, indulge in a coney dog, a hearty serving of BBQ from Slow’s, or a slider from Green Dot Stables. We could go on and on!
5. It’s situated on a gorgeous body of water.
Yes, Detroit is just a stone’s throw from the Great Lakes, but our favorite body of water is undoubtedly the Detroit River. When you spend time in Detroit, you’ll notice that some of the city's most gorgeous spots are situated right along the river. Take a stroll at Milliken State Park, try your hand at fishing, or take a boat tour along the water — what’s not to love?
6. It’s just minutes from Canada.
Our international neighbors are a wonderful bunch of people, and we’re lucky to live just a few minutes from the Canadian border. To get to Ontario from the Motor City, all it takes is a quick jaunt across the beautiful Ambassador Bridge. Can you imagine anything more convenient?
7. Its sports fans are full of pride.
Every city takes pride in its sports teams, but Detroiters take it to a whole new level. We’re fiercely loyal to our teams, even when they don't perform perfectly (we’re looking at you, Lions)! It’s tough to imagine anything more fun than a day at Comerica Park, and we’re sure you’ll agree.
8. Its residents are resilient.
No, Detroit isn’t perfect — and those of us who’ve lived here for an extended period of time have seen the city rise and fall multiple times over. But the best part about Detroit is that its people never give up, despite negative press and all kinds of damaging stereotypes. We might get knocked down, but that never stops us from standing up again.
9. Detroit is a city on the rise.
Forget what you’ve seen in the headlines. Detroit is overflowing with art, culture, startups, new business ventures, and wonderful residents. When you visit the Motor City, we promise you’ll be impressed by what you see. So, what are you waiting for? The next step is on you: come and see why we think the Motor City is the best place around.
