There are certainly lots of ways to enjoy the Bay State. From hikes to museums to shopping and exploring, there’s something for everyone here. But, one of my favorite ways to see the best of the state is by taking any of the scenic drives in Massachusetts. And, a local favorite is the Mohawk Trail Scenic Byway. It happens to be one of the first scenic roads in the country and also one of the best scenic drives in the USA, as it crosses and meanders along five rivers, through the woods, and through small towns.

The Mohawk Trail Scenic Byway was first opened in 1914 as one of the very first scenic routes in the country. However, its origins date back even further.

The route the byway traces dates back more than 10,000 years ago. During that time, Native Americans first walked along footpaths that followed the rivers where they hunted and traded.

Now a scenic route, the Mohawk Scenic Byway traverses through forests and historic towns. Travelers have numerous opportunities to stop at overlooks and hiking trails along the way.

The most famous part of the Mohawk Trail is perhaps the crazy hairpin turn. Here you can stop for spectacular views as well as a bite to eat at the Golden Eagle Restaurant.

The Mohawk Trail Scenic Byway in Massachusetts is, by far, one of the best scenic drives near me and I sometimes hop in the car to do it simply to unwind. However, you’ll undoubtedly want to set yourself up for a great trip by making sure you have the best road trip snacks. Trust me, it’s not nearly as great without that!

The best road trips through Massachusetts lead to the most interesting and beautiful spots in the state. Some of the best include:

  • Massachusetts Waterfalls Road Trip: This 300-mile trip takes about 8 hours, depending on how frequently you stop. It also depends on how much you linger when you gaze at each of the nine spots along the way. With so many gorgeous views, we're guessing you can really draw this out.
  • The Massachusetts Coastal Lighthouse Road Trip: If you love the incredible coast of the Bay State, you'll want to take this road trip. It starts in Truro and ends in Gloucester, or you can do it in the reverse direction. Either way, it's a great way to spend the day.
  • The Massachusetts Historical Sites Road Trip: History buffs will want to hop in the car and check out each of the eight spots on this trip. From Plymouth to Salem, it's got it all.
  • The Massachusetts Haunted Road Trip: Perfect for fall, this route is nearly 400 miles and will take the better part of a day. If you have the time, it's fun to stay overnight at a haunted inn to make it a weekend journey.

 

Which hidden gems in Massachusetts should I visit?

You should visit as many hidden gems in Massachusetts as you possibly can. A few of the best to put on your list are:

  • The Museum of the Modern Renaissance, Somerville: Hidden in plain sight, this spot was founded in 2002 by Russian artists Ekaterina Sorokina and Nicholas Shaplyko. It's filled with incredible colors and sculptures. While it's not open to the public, the owners offer public tours occasionally.
  • Lovells Island, Boston Harbor: This remote 61-acre island is part of the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park and can only be accessed by private boat or ferry.
  • Bradford Seafood Restaurant & Market, Haverhill: This small hidden gem offers a casual restaurant as well as a market allowing fish lovers to bring their favorite food home to cook.
