This natural pond is located in Walden Pond State Reservation in Concord. While there is no public transportation to this secluded area, there is a parking lot off Route 126.
This pond might sound familiar to you, as it's the same nature that inspired Henry David Thoreau's book, Walden. As the story goes, Thoreau sat beside the pond as he wrote.
This is the deepest natural pond in Massachusetts, and is actually a "kettle hole". This "pond" has become a famous example of a kettle hole, as it was determined to have been created by retreating glaciers 10,000 years ago.
Since this body of water is so important to Concord, you'll want to be respectful to the land when you visit. Dogs are not allowed, and you must take your trash out with you.
Since Walden Pond is so deep, at 107-feet, the water stays cool and is a popular spot for swimming in the summer. There are endless recreational opportunities here, but perhaps just sitting and contemplating is the most appealing.
