This authentic 1919 railroad caboose is located in Chester and is available for overnight stays. It’s the perfect New England getaway where guests can experience a taste of the golden age of railroad, no time machine needed.
From the outside, this caboose looks picture-perfect. It’s nestled in a grassy meadow and attached to what looks like a tank of baking chocolate. The outdoor area includes a picnic table and a barbecue grill on the lawn.
Inside, you’ll find a vintage setup that’s equal parts rustic and cozy. Bring your own sleeping bags and curl up on the polished wooden benches with leather cushions, which can accommodate up to four guests. The caboose also offers an quaint writing desk and old-fashioned fixtures that will delight kids and grownups alike. Though the caboose itself doesn’t have a bathroom (remember, it’s camping!), guests do have 24-hour access to bathrooms at the station next door.
Rail enthusiasts will also be pleased to learn that not only do guests get the unique experience of lodging in an authentic antique caboose, but that real freight trains pass by quite frequently on the CSX Boston Line. Guests can also expect to learn a lot about the historic railroad that passes through Chester, check out old railroad artifacts, and even explore an old abandoned quarry nearby.
While you might think that this unique experience would come with a painful price tag, it’s actually shockingly affordable. Camping in the caboose is only $60 per night, or $50 per night for two nights. This includes all the amenities above, though guests should remember this is a true camping experience and should prepare themselves with sleeping bags, lanterns, bug spray, etc.
