If you enjoy military history, there’s a historic military park in Massachusetts you will have to put on your list to visit. Fort Taber Park is a one-of-a-kind park that’s also as scenic as it is historic.

Set on Clark's Point in New Bedford, Fort Taber Park is a 47-acre green space. Throughout its acreage, visitors will find a museum, a playground, numerous military batteries, and a 19th-century fort.

Fort Taber was originally built as an earthwork in 1861 during the Civil War. Soon after it was completed, six brass and iron cannons were installed to protect the city of New Bedford.

The fort was named in honor of the New Bedford mayor at the time. In 1963, granite walls were added to the fort. The tall walls replaced the earthworks and became more of a deterrent to enemy forces.
