The Charming Massachusetts General Store That’s Been Open Since Before The Civil War
There’s truly nothing like an old-fashioned country store. From sugary treats to odds and ends, a good general store will supply you with everything you need to have fun, whip up a tasty meal, or do some work around the house. This charming shop in Massachusetts has been around since before the Civil War, so you know it’s something special.
The 1856 Country Store in Centerville has been around since (you guessed it) 1856. That’s a full five years before the start of the American Civil War in 1861.
It was originally built as a cranberry storage building in 1840 before transitioning to a shoe shop in 1842 and finally becoming a general store a few years later.
Things haven’t changed much at this shop in the past 150 years. The store still sells essentials like jam, honey, hardwire bits and bobs, and kitchen essentials. Plus all the penny candy you could ever wish for.
However, they’re also a treasure trove of unique locally made gifts and treats. Check out their their hand-poured candles, old-fashioned children’s toys, gorgeous artisan jewelry, or carefully curated book selection.
They also carry Cape Cod classics like beach plum jelly, dried starfish and seashells, and eye-catching nautical gear. You can even take home a little sack of Cape Cod Beer peanut brittle!
The shop has something at every price point. You can walk in with $5 and walk out with a tasty snack and a fun gift, or do some serious shopping for friends and family. In fact, they’re a favorite spot for holiday shopping and Christmas decor.
Though the 1856 Country Store probably isn’t going anywhere, you’ll still want to check this spot out as soon as possible. It’s a charming destination that’s only getting better with time.
