The Best Ice Cream In Massachusetts Actually Comes From A Small Town Gas Station
When you start craving quality ice cream, it’s unlikely you’d consider hitting up the corner gas station. However, this small town gas station in Douglas actually has some of the best ice cream in the state. Here’s why you should head straight to The Ice Cream Lady the next time your sweet tooth starts to act up.
The Ice Cream Lady in Douglas is a classic New England ice cream shop. Except it’s located in a gas station convenience store.
This is small town ice cream at its best. The Ice Cream Lady has been serving up cones and cups to locals for years, but you’d never realize this shop was even there were it not for one very large clue out front…
You’ll know you’ve found the right place once you spot this lovely lady by the side of the road.
Whether you find this towering ice cream sculpture creepy or cool, she’s a local landmark. She’s also a sign that delicious things are in store.
This hidden ice cream shop is one of the most popular places for dessert in town.
The Ice Cream Lady operates out of a small walk-up window built into the side of Family Convenience Center, the gas station’s convenience store. The lines can get long in the summer, but things always move along quickly and you’ll rarely have to wait more than a few minutes for your cone.
You would never think, but the ice cream here is world-class. Even the Phantom Gourmet voted it the #1 ice cream joint in Massachusetts.
They offer 24 flavors of hard-scooped Richardson’s ice cream, a local product that comes straight from the Richardson’s dairy in Middleton.
Some of their typical flavors are Black Raspberry, Butter Pecan, Bubble Gum, Cake Batter, Chocolate, Chocolate Chip, Coffee, Coffee, Kahlua Brownie, Cookie Dough, Cotton Candy, Death By Chocolate, Maple Walnut, Milky Way, Mint Chocolate Chip, Mocha Chip, Moose Tracks, Peppermint Stick, Pistachio, Raspberry Chocolate Chip, Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, Rum Raisin, Strawberry, Strawberry Cheesecake, and Vanilla.
At the end of the season (around September), this place offers free ice cream for all until it’s gone!
Hunker down at one of their picnic tables with a heaping cone of chocolate and vanilla soft serve, or have a slightly less guilty indulgence with one of their low-fat options, including orange or watermelon sherbet.
Or, just go all out with a decadent banana split. You only live once, right?
A trip to The Ice Cream Lady in Douglas should definitely be on your summer bucket list.
