This Fairytale Tower In Massachusetts Is The Only One Of Its Kind In America
There are plenty of unique and interesting places in Massachusetts, but not all of them can boast of having a storybook tower. This one-of-a-kind attraction is a serene and beautiful place for contemplation. Plus, the story behind the tower is truly moving.
If take a long stroll through St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Milford, you’ll come across one of the most distinctive structures in the state.
This quiet graveyard is actually home to a large Irish round tower. Even cooler, it’s the only one in the United States.
So just what is a round tower anyway? Like the name suggests, an Irish round tower is a type of tall stone tower that were constructed during medieval times and commonly used as bell towers.
The round tower in Milford is built entirely of local granite. It towers over the surrounding stone graves and monuments, looking like something that would be more at home in a fairytale than a cemetery,
This lovely tower was built in the late 1800s by a local priest, Father Patrick Cuddihy. He dedicated the tower to all the Irish immigrants who left their homeland to make a new life in America and did not manage to return to Ireland before their deaths.
The tower is a striking white color and nestled next to a pretty pond. On the other side, it’s flanked by a large boulder that actually conceals a mysterious cave with an inaccessible entrance.
