If you’re a true Bay Stater, summer tastes like fresh seafood on the beach. This amazing traditional clambake happening on Cape Cod this season is the perfect way to celebrate the warm weather and fill up on mouthwatering seafood treats at the same time.
This dreamy Cape Cod resort is hosting one of the best summer experiences around. The Chatham Bars Inn is located right on the water and is inviting guests to participate in their annual series of traditional clambakes on the beach.
If you’ve never been to a traditional New England clambake, here’s how it works. A large hole in the sand is lined with stones and filled with wood and charcoal. The whole thing is set alight and allowed to burn for hours, until the stones become red hot.

Next, the coals are raked and the pit is layered with fresh seaweed. Yep, straight off the beach. The seaweed contains little capsules filled with seawater, which help steam the food. Next, bags and packets of fresh corn, potatoes, steamers, mussels, and lobster are tossed in and the whole thing is topped with another layer of seaweed.

Everything is allowed to steam for an hour. Finally, the protective tarp is pulled back and the delectable seafood bounty is unveiled. Food cooked like this has a distinctive flavor that you just can’t reproduce on the grill or stove. It’s tender, succulent, and just a bit salty.
Unless you hire a catering company to stage a private event, it’s hard to find a traditional clambake like this that’s open to everyone. The prices for 2019 are $102 per adult with lobster and $72 per adult without lobster.
Children can eat for $70 with lobster or $37 without lobster. This year’s dates are July 4, 5, 11, 12, 14, 18, 19, 21, 25, 26, and 30 and August 1, 2, 4, 8, 10, 11, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, and 30.
If you can’t bear the thought of leaving (or maybe had too many of their amazing mojitos) you can always check into the hotel for the night. There’s nothing like waking up to a glorious sunrise after the best seafood feast of your summer!
