Most People Don’t Know The Story Behind Massachusetts' Abandoned Bridge To Nowhere

If you’ve ever driven around Waltham, Massachusetts, chances are you’ve passed beneath this abandoned bridge without giving it a second thought. However, the history of the Linden Street Bridge is tied to an almost forgotten period in Massachusetts history.

The Linden Street Bridge is a historic bridge in Waltham. It was once part of the now-abandoned Central Massachusetts Railroad, distinct from the Massachusetts Central Railroad.

This pretty bridge has been deserted since 1975. It’s about 98 feet long and 17 feet wide and rests on granite supports. Built in 1894, trains rushed over its riveted lattices for over 80 years years.

The railroad used to run between North Cambridge and Northampton, providing transport nearly edge to edge across Massachusetts. It had its heyday in the late 1800s and early 1900s, but was abandoned bit by bit until service finally petered out in the mid-1900s.

Today, the bridge goes nowhere. Its rusted trusses and intricate lattices are a melancholy reminder of when you could ride from the coast to the west in comfort and style.

The Linden Street Bridge has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, so you can count on it being around for years to come. To have a look for yourself, simply drive through Waltham on Linden Street (Massachusetts Route 60).
