Who doesn’t love a good waterfall? Many of these natural wonders are somewhat hidden in Maryland, but that’s okay. Half of the fun is hiking there, knowing that your hard work will pay off once you see a majestic waterfall. Here are four waterfall hikes in Maryland that are worth taking at least once. The best part is that they’re all relatively short, perfect for almost anyone to enjoy. Check out the below list and get outdoors!
Head to Swallow Falls State Park where you can walk a path between these two impressive waterfalls. The journey is rocky but at only 1 1/4 miles long, it's a perfectly pleasant distance. You'll see all sorts of unique rock formations along the way and marvel at the tall trees that are over 300 years old!
You can find this waterfall at Rocks State Park, which was also featured in the Disney film, Tuck Everlasting. According to AllTrails, Falling Branch Trail is about 1.3 miles in length and will lead you to this natural wonder. The path is a bit bumpy so strollers aren't recommended. In the summer, you may spot visitors wading in the water.
This unique waterfall cascades down boulders, making for a perfect place to perch and enjoy the trickling views. To get here, you can take the 2.8 mile path at Cunningham Falls State Park. The sights along the way are gorgeous year-round but we particularly prefer them during autumn.
Patapsco Valley State Park stretches to both Howard and Baltimore County, offering all sorts of things to see, from swinging bridges, tunnels, and more. An area highlight is Cascade Falls and the short trail to this spot is only about a quarter mile from the Avalon area parking lot. The trek is bumpy but once you arrive, this little oasis is worth it. Simpy sit and enjoy the view.
