Ferry Point Park Overlooks Maryland's Chesapeake Bay

Looking for a unique day trip destination in Maryland? Whether you live in Baltimore, Washington D.C., or anywhere in between, Maryland’s eastern shore feels like a true retreat. And while we love destinations like Assateague Island and St. Michael’s, you don’t need to drive far for a fun-filled day of adventure.

Just past the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, also known as the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bay Bridge, you will find the small island community of Kent Island. The largest island in the Chesapeake Bay, Kent Island is a popular destination for fishing, but visitors also enjoy perusing the shops within the Stevensville Historic District, seeing the historic Stevensville Train Depot, and soaking in island views at Terrapin Nature Park and Matapeake Park.

I recently visited Kent Island on a short creative retreat and found endless enjoyment along the island's boardwalk trails and bay views. And while it was too cold to explore long, I discovered a hidden gem I can't wait to share with you: Ferry Point Park.

I accessed Ferry Point Park from The Queen Anne's County Chesapeake Heritage and Visitors Center.

Even on an overcast day in late winter, I felt a serene beauty that’s hard to find in Maryland on the boardwalk trail surrounded by tall grasses, trees, and glimpses of the water.

While there were a few cars in the parking lot, I didn’t encounter a single person on the trail, only adding to the peacefulness I found at this waterfront park.

Before long, I found the true entrance to Ferry Point Park: or at least the entrance sign.

This picturesque half-moon of sand felt protected from the winds, and I imagine it would be a phenomenal spot to bring your kids on a warm summer day.

I sat and soaked in the beauty of this little-known oasis as long as I could brave the cold — I wasn’t dressed for a long excursion, but I will be back someday, preferably when it’s warmer.
