The state of Maryland has earned its bragging rights and the following 10 facts are proof. Next time someone makes fun of the Old Line State, feel free to brag about:
1. We're the blue crab capital of the world.
And nobody steams and seasons these bad boys quite like we do.
2. We're the richest state.
According to the most recent census, the average Maryland household makes $73,000 annually, which is more than any other state in the US. However, cost of living is about 10% higher as well.
3. We're among the most educated in the country.
Maryland often ranks among the top 10 smartest states in the US. The education system is top-notch and many go on to receive bachelors degrees, masters, and beyond.
4. Our flag is the best. Period.
It's impossible not to love the bold patterns and colors on Maryland's flag. Show me another state flag this beautiful. I dare you.
5. The bay views are unmatched.
Can you imagine Maryland without the Chesapeake Bay? The bay is one of our most valuable resources and it's quite gorgeous to look at, too.
6. Iconic literature was created here.
While living in Baltimore, Edgar Allan Poe penned some of his most famous works. He died after being found delirious in the Baltimore streets but his legacy lives on. He even inspired the name of Maryland's football team, the Ravens.
7. The US Capital was in Maryland... for a day.
We all know the capital as Washington DC but the town of Brookeville, Maryland held the title for a mere 24 hours. After the British burned the capital in 1814, the US President and cabinet members fled to Brookeville for a short time.
8. Maryland has the oldest US state house in continuous legislative use.
The Maryland State House in Annapolis dates back to 1772 and has been continuously used for government matters ever since.
9. We have all types of terrain.
Maryland is known as America in Miniature for its vast differences in terrain. You can find mountains, beaches, wetlands, waterfalls... just about everything except a desert. This makes the state perfect for explorers.
10. We're the birthplace of the Star Spangled Banner.
America's national anthem was penned by Francis Scott key while he was at Baltimore's Fort McHenry.
