It’s pretty well known that Maryland’s state flower is the Black-eyed Susan. And of course, that our state bird is the Baltimore Oriole. But did you know that Maryland also has an official state exercise? It’s walking! That’s right — and here are 10 of the most beautiful places that you can partake in walking in the state. Do some stretches, lace up those sneakers, and prepare for a whole lot of scenic beauty.
When people think of Assateague Island, they usually envision the white sand beach and wild horses. However, Assateague Island is also home to a handful of nature trails that are perfect for a scenic stroll. The boardwalk paths are especially lovely.
The C & O Canal stretches for over 80 miles from Washington DC to Cumberland, Maryland. So, there are a ton of spots to hop on the towpath and partake in your own adventure. The sights change depending on the season, but it's always a beautiful stroll.

Great Allegheny Passage begins where the C & O Canal ends in Cumberland, Maryland. If you were to travel all 150 miles of the GAP, you'd end up in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania! However, sticking to the Maryland section is still full of beauty, including tons of railroad tracks and tunnels.

This charming canal park is located in the city of Frederick. Walk along the canal, which is filled with colorful plants during summer months. And check it out during wintertime for holiday boats! No matter when you visit, this lovely spot is sure to please.
This 6.5 mile trail on Kent Island begins at Terrapin Nature Park. It'll lead you past farmland, woods, and many more types of terrain and sights. You'll see plenty of people bicycling along this path, but walking is great here, too.

Whether you stroll the North Beach Pier during the day or evening, the serene water views are sure to please. This area is most-crowded during summertime but don't forget to check it out during the holiday season as well. You just may see a giant Christmas tree right on the pier.
Centrally located, Patapsco Valley State Park is within driving distance to many Marylanders. The park spans about 32 miles so there are plenty of pleasant walking paths to choose from. If you're looking for paved, check out Grist Mill trail, which leads to this swinging bridge!
You can't visit Cambridge without stopping at Long Wharf Park. There are some green areas where you can relax and take in the water views, but nothing compares to a walk on the pier. This wooden structure goes all the way around Choptank River Lighthouse and the sights are phenomenal, especially during sunset. Bring a camera!

This gem in Howard County is perfect for families. The paved path around the lake is a little over 2-miles long and there's plenty to see along the way. Prepare for water views, woodland areas, rustic bridges, and more.
Enjoy views of the Patuxent River while strolling along the boardwalk at Solomons Island. There are also a handful of local businesses and eateries in the area that you'll want to explore while here. Check out that bridge view in the distance!
