The idea for the aquarium came about after the city mayor at the time, William Donald Schaefer, visited the New England Aquarium in Boston. He envisioned a similar place in Baltimore, hoping to enhance the harbor and its attractions.

His vision paid off because today, the aquarium is one of the most impressive in the nation. Its area covers 6 acres and it holds a whopping 2,200,000 gallons of water!
